Senior Director, Philanthropy (Sponsorships and Major Gifts)

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE FOR CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP (ICC)

The ICC exists to unlock Canada for newcomers. Our programs include:

  • The Canoo Access Pass, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of newcomers to Canada by providing free access, via its app, to our national partner network of over 1400 parks, museums, galleries, science centres and other sports and cultural attractions.
  • Building Citizenship, which sees the ICC host 70 enhanced citizenship ceremonies each year nationwide. These ceremonies are a significant life milestone in people’s lives, and we take this opportunity to welcome new citizens, celebrate their achievement, and initiate them into the obligations and opportunities of reconciliation.
  • Ideas and Insights, our research and advocacy arm.

The ICC was founded by the Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson, the first refugee to become Governor General of Canada, and internationally acclaimed intellectual, John Ralston Saul. The ICC office is in downtown Toronto, with some team members working remotely in different locations.

Our team is incredibly driven and passionate about our work. If you’re looking for a diverse and exciting workplace, this is it: our 19 staff hail from 13 different countries.

WHY WE NEED YOU

Our organization stands on the precipice of explosive growth. Since relaunching our Canoo Access Pass in May, over 40,000 people have downloaded the application: a 500% increase over previous levels. New in-kind partners like Cirque du Soleil, Live Nation, Aldo Group, and Air Canada joined Canoo this year. Just six months after reviving our Ideas & Insights department, ICC has made headlines by contrasting Canada’s perception of itself as a paradise for immigrants with data suggesting that newcomers’ actual experiences of Canada are beginning to diverge from the ideal.

Canada’s future relies on immigrants not just coming here but staying here and becoming citizens. We are the only national organization focused exclusively on this crucial objective.

To play the role Canada needs us to play, we need to grow – a lot. Will you help us with that? The opportunity is clearly there to be seized, and while our philanthropy team is extremely talented and hard-working, it is too small for the size of the job at hand. The team is also relatively new to professional fundraising. They would benefit from your experience, leadership, and mentorship. Your proven track record of scaling up a fundraising program will inspire them to reach even higher. More on your team below.

ABOUT YOU

Please apply for this job if you are:

  • Highly ambitious and motivated by growth, achievement and success
  • Hungry to make your mark in the philanthropy world by stepping into a bigger role where you can prove you’ve got the right stuff
  • Good at forming solid relationships based on honesty and trust
  • An accomplished strategist who can assess a situation, make a plan, and execute it well
  • A proven performer with a track record of successfully scaling up a fundraising program
  • Of the belief that non-profit organizations can be every bit as professional, capable, and growth oriented as for-profit startups and scaleups
  • Committed to securing Canada’s future by giving newcomers the best possible experience of our wonderful country
  • A hyper ethical, no-nonsense person who is easy to get along with
  • A doer. Everyone in this organization rolls up their sleeves, including the CEO. There is no room on our team for managers who expect others to do all the actual work.
  • A clear, compelling, concise writer. This is REALLY important to us.

We’re also looking for the following items on your CV:

  • 5-8 years’ experience contributing to high-growth philanthropy teams.
  • Proven experience securing major gifts and sponsorships. Please list the campaigns you worked on, the capacity in which you contributed, and how much you raised.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing people
  • Maybe you went to university. Maybe you didn’t.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles and best practices, demonstrated by experience, certifications, or a combination of the two.
  • Strong aptitude for the mechanics of fundraising, including pipeline management and leveraging a CRM to its full potential.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is a major asset, as is proficiency in other languages spoken by newcomers to Canada.

YOUR MANDATE

Reporting to the CEO and working closely and collaboratively with our Director of Philanthropy, scale up our major giving and corporate sponsorship revenues. Grow and develop your team in the process. Don’t forget to have fun.

YOUR TEAM

You will enter into a stable, professional team that is dedicated, hard-working, and talented. They hold important relationships with longstanding donors and harbour a healthy store of institutional knowledge. They have done a heroic job of updating and improving our records and CRM, so you don’t have to. This is a new position. You are not replacing anyone. You will be joining our current Director of Philanthropy (CFRE candidate), who will participate in the interview process. You will be expected to work collaboratively and constructively together, bringing out the best in each other and your team.

COMPENSATION

  • $100,000 – $120,000 per year, plus a 10% premium if you are professionally bilingual in English and French. In addition, we offer non-discretionary performance bonuses within the ethical guidelines of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including extended health and dental benefits.
